MOORING SYSTEMS / CHAINS

The best mooring chains are medium grade 32-40 steel. They are resistant to corrosion and will stretch significantly before breaking.
A single boat, even in adverse weather weather conditions will not rupt these chains

 

TOTAL SAFETY : the riser chain isconnected to a ground chain or block via a forged loop or welded connector shackle.
A slipnot around the ground chain secures the mooring.

 

Deadweight anchors : i.e. concrete blocks -are the most economical form of anchors for small boats. They can be linked together via a ground chain.
We provide 30mm forged steel rings including 10mm wire mesh and block moulds to help you make your own anchor block.
The ring is ex centered 30 cm away from gravity center to offer strong holding power, as anchors can do.

 RUPTURE
Can only occur if chain comes under tension.
We have developped a software program which determines the breaking strain of chain and shackles. It takes into account length, weight and depth. A dynamometer can also be used to check the condition of the chain in the field.

The weight of chain will have to be supported by the mooring buoy

 DESTRUCTIVE TESTS ON USED CHAINS

 

We have carried out experiments on the breaking strains of used chain in order to determine when it is necessary to change our mooring components. Remember the chain in use must always be capable of holding the vessel in all weather conditions.

For example an 18mm chain which spent 6 years underwater and reduced to 50% of its original diameter was still able to withold 9.5 tons before breaking. Before rupture the links had stretched up to 15% over the original pitch size (18mm).

By surveying moorings & annually one can determine when mooring components should be replaced.
